Scope note
Harvest festival celebrated by ethnic Chinese and Vietnamese peoples on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, near the autumnal equinox. The festival has roots in ancient Chinese religious rituals celebrating the harvest. It may also have ties to ancient moon-worshipping rituals. Observances included worshipping Tudi Gong (the earth god) or Tai Yin Jun (the moon god) and references to other myths and legends incorporating the moon. It is customary to have a family reunion during the full moon, to eat moon cakes, and to appreciate the beauty of the full moon.
